Everything You Need to Know About Anti-Gravity Yoga

Celebrity fitness trainer and author Deanne Panday decodes Anti-Gravity Yoga, the new global fad, and tells you how it can shape you up for your big day.

WHAT IS ANTI-GRAVITY WORKOUT, THE LATEST IN CALORIE CRUNCHING, ALL ABOUT?

It is a hybrid fitness style where traditional yoga postures are combined with aerial acts, pilates and dance. This technique is the first-of-its-kind in a new fitness genre known as suspension fitness.

HOW MUCH TIME PRIOR TO THE WEDDING SHOULD A BRIDE-TO-BE START THE WORKOUT?

Anti-gravity has many kinds of classes, from pilates to restorative and strength workouts. Brides can begin three months prior to their wedding. However, a well-balanced diet along with cardiovascular exercises and strength training has to be incorporated at least twice or thrice a week.

WHAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL DIET TO GO WITH THIS FORM OF EXERCISE?

I recommend a wholesome diet that has the right balance of proteins, carbs, fibre, and fats from all food groups. A good starting off point for the  average individual is 50 per cent carbs, 20 per cent protein, and 30 per cent fat, all to an approximate value as it is different for each individual. Sweets, fried foods, and food that is over cooked or curried is best avoided. And yes, eat small.

HOW MANY CALORIES CAN ONE BURN, SAY, IN A 90-MINUTES SESSION?

It depends on the intensity of the workout and varies from one individual to another. If the bride-to-be has more muscle mass, she will burn more calories; if she has more fat, she will burn less. However, on an average, a woman will burn 500-to-800 calories per session.

THE WORKOUT WORKS BEST ON...

It works on the core, hip flexor, gluteus and the back. The rest of the training is focussed on upper body toning and tightening. With well-guided moves aimed at improving body and spinal postures, anti-gravity workout works on the overall body structure and fitness so that you get a leaner and lighter body for everyone to admire.

Advantages of Anti-Gravity

1. The inversions are anti-ageing and over time can help women glow and look fresher.

2. The postures will tone and tighten the core allowing the bride to flaunt her bare, chiselled midriff.

3. Increases sexual health and improves the pelvic tilt.

4. Increases blood circulation that lends natural glow.

5. Strengthens weak joints, bones, and muscles.

6. The workout balances hormones in case of PCOD, a lifestyle ailment that could cause weight gain.

7. Unclogs the digestive system as constipation or bloating could be a reason for a tummy looking big.

8. Eases the thought process as fresh blood is sent to the brain releasing neurotransmitters.

9. Zero compression inversions take all the pressure the spine. As they decompress the spine— chances of injuries caused by constant sitting, standing, and bad posture are minimised.
