Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and other honeymoon destinations that don’t require a visa

Planning the romantic vacation of your dreams just got easier!

If you’re getting married this season or are a newlywed, there’s good news for your honeymoon plans—Malaysia has joined a slew of countries that no longer require a visa for Indian travellers. Starting December 1, you’ll be able to visit this picturesque honeymoon destination without a visa. Sri Lanka and Thailand, too, waived off visa requirements for Indians recently. You know what this means—an easy-to-plan honeymoon in a dreamy international locale. Think bustling cities with an exciting culinary culture, lush islands bordered by pristine white beaches, and mountains dotted with ancient monasteries and temples.

Excited already? Ahead, discover the five best honeymoon destinations you can visit without visa.

Malaysia

A modern, cosmopolitan capital? Check. Expansive national parks and sanctuaries where one can experience the rich biodiversity of the country? Check. A buzzing street food culture that promises a delicious meal at every corner? Check. Evidently, Malaysia has it all. And if you’re a couple who likes experiencing a bit of everything, it should definitely be on your list. In Kuala Lumpur, gape at the iconic Petronas Towers, take a walk in sprawling Chinatown, and explore the Batu Caves that lead to a revered Hindu temple. In Penang Island, don’t miss the colourful UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, perfect for romantic photo-ops, take in the views of the stunning island from one of its hills, and enjoy a meal at one of its many hawker centres.

Sri Lanka

The island nation is just a hop, a skip, and a jump away—perfect if both you and your partner have busy schedules and can only fit in a minimoon. Weligama in the south is only a two-hour drive from Colombo airport and is quickly becoming a favourite with tourists. For couples that don’t like a packed itinerary and would like an unhurried vacation, the small town with nothing much to do but relax on its clean sandy beaches is ideal. Of course, if you’re looking for adventure, there’s surfing, yoga, and elephant safaris to enjoy. History buffs will love the old port city of Galle, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the town on foot, pass by Dutch-colonial buildings, step into boutiques selling local crafts and knick knacks, and stop by at chic cafes that dish out modern Sri Lankan fare.

Thailand

Indians can enjoy 30 days of visa-free stay in Thailand till May 10, 2024, making it the ideal period to visit the country. Thailand is popular with international tourists, given it is easy-on-the-pocket, is traveller-friendly, and promises a mix of both stunning nature and vibrant city life. While the capital, Bangkok, with its temples, famous street food, night markets, and rooftop bars is not to be missed, travel to Phuket for its historic shrines and museums and to the picturesque Phi Phi Islands nearby that call to tourists with their untouched beaches, unexplored jungles, and crystal-clear waters punctuated by towering green cliffs. For a honeymoon that feels like you’re in paradise, Thailand is the place to go.

Mauritius

Tropical destinations are a hit with Indian newlyweds, especially if you have had a winter wedding and are looking to escape the cold weather for balmier temperatures. Mauritius, with its bleached beaches, sapphire waters, and luxe boutique resorts, will make for a honeymoon of a lifetime. Chase sunsets at the beach, go hiking in its mountainous interiors, swim with its marine life—there’s plenty to do during your time in the island.

Bhutan

If hill stations with colder weather and the promise of adventure are more your speed, then Bhutan should be on your radar. Steeped in history, the kingdom nation is full of monasteries, mountains made for treks, along with serene lakes and landscapes in Thimpu that are worth exploring. While Paro, a small town that is also home to the country’s only international airport, is known for the slightly challenging Tiger’s Nest trek that leads up to the eponymous monastery and is quite popular with visitors.
