Is face shaving the ultimate skincare move? Experts weigh in

The pros, the cons, and everything in between.

Shaving body hair, especially facial hair, has been condemned for generations by watchful mothers and grandmothers. Then why are our feeds replete with face-shaving videos and experts calling it the latest skincare breakthrough boasting holistic benefits? We turned to seasoned professionals to break it down for us, the good and the bad.

Debunking the myth

The notion that shaving makes your hair grow thicker and faster has been passed from generation to generation. But does this hold any merit? “It’s a myth,” said Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, the medical director and founder of ISAAC Luxe. She explains, “When we shave, the razor cuts the hair at the surface level, leaving a pointed tip. The perceived darkness and thickness of regrown hair are due to the contrast between the blunt ends and the skin. Shaving doesn’t alter the fundamental properties of hair.”

The benefits

Dr Neha Yadav, an aesthetic cosmetic surgeon at VLCC India, highlights the efficacy of face shaving. “Dermaplaning provides deeper exfoliation than typical scrubs or chemical exfoliants, resulting in smoother, brighter skin. It helps remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. By eliminating peach fuzz, dermaplaning allows for smoother make-up application and can enhance the effectiveness of skincare products by enabling better absorption.”

According to her, regular dermaplaning can stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It goes without saying that when trying this out at home, it's essential to use high-quality tools and follow proper techniques to avoid irritation or injury.

Addressing the safety concern

Using new tools can be riddled with apprehensions. Dr Gupta attests to the safety of the procedure and adds, “Using a face razor can be safe if done correctly. However, it is important to follow proper techniques and precautions to avoid irritation, nicks, and rashes. It is also important to use a sterile blade.”

She also adds that the technique is only to be practiced once every three to four weeks. “This frequency allows time for the skin to breathe and hair to grow back without causing over–exfoliation.”

The correct technique

Dr Gupta delineates the right technique to follow, starting off with double cleansing. “Then, apply a layer of a gentle cleanser or a hydrating cleanser. This helps create a smooth base. Use a fresh, premium premium-quality blade to shave. It’s essential to be gentle with your skin and not apply too much pressure,” she added. She emphasises shaving in the direction of hair growth. Use short gentle strokes at a 45-degree angle. Be gentle on sensitive areas of the face.

Opt for a dermatologically-tested product, say from Flawless Beauty. Their Finishing Touch Dermaplane Glo Facial Exfoliator also features LED to help illuminate and identify easy-to-miss facial hair.

After-care is essential

Dr Yadav also emphasises hydration as key in aftercare. “After dermaplaning, it's crucial to soothe and protect your skin. Apply a hydrating serum or moisturiser, which contains hyaluronic acid to lock in the moisture. Don't forget to use sunscreen daily, as your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays after exfoliation.”

Dr Gupta suggests natural calming agents like aloe vera and glycerine, followed by sunscreen.

We recommend trying out Innisfree Aloe Vera Gel and Clinique’s Limited Edition Moisture Surge™ Hydrator (Aloe Vera). These are packed with skin-loving aloe vera extract and cooling agents to calm down the skin.
