Four designers discuss the reinvention of the classic sari

Palak Shah, Khushi Shah, Aditi Chand, and KH Radharaman share their intel on how and why these drapes find a place in contemporary closets in new avatars.

There’s an undeniable charm to the classic sari. While admired for generations in India, the grand drape has cut across cultural boundaries to attract admirers from the West, who are now seen donning these nine yards at prestigious events (remember Yuko Kishida, the Japanese prime minister’s wife, wearing a green sari for the G20 Summit?). Whether it be the illustrious Banarasi, Chanderi or Jamdani, saris are sure to deliver elegance. But today, these time-honoured pieces are being infused with a contemporary flair through innovations like pre-drapes and designs like the sari gown, offering new-age interpretations of a classic. Palak Shah, CEO of Ekaya Banaras; Khushi Shah, creative director of Shanti Banaras; Aditi Chand, co-founder and CEO of Tilfi Banaras; and KH Radharaman, founder, CEO and principal designer at The House of Angadi spell out the reasons for the global appeal of saris today.

MODERN BRIDALWEAR

“Modern brides are increasingly looking for ways to express their individuality, and saris offer them versatility, besides being a meaningful choice,” summarises Khushi Shah. Weaving together this age-old legacy with present-day aesthetics resonates with brides and their desire to honour heritage while showcasing their individuality. “It’s a revival rooted in heritage and an embrace of individuality,” says Palak Shah. “The sari is a playground, and your wedding day is the perfect opportunity to indulge your inner fashionista.”

CULTURAL SPILLOVER

A broader cultural renaissance and the sari retail entry of big business houses have created a strong pitch for them in mainstream narratives, Radharaman says, while Chand highlights that fashion in Indian cinema, the emergence of celebrity and social media culture, and India’s stronger footing on the global stage are all contributing factors, as well. “As the world becomes more interconnected, there’s a growing appreciation for diverse cultures and traditions,” adds Khushi Shah. “Celebrity endorsement at various events has also had a significant impact on the modern-day sari revival.”

TRANSCENDING TRENDS

While it has shared the spotlight with other garments like lehengas, there’s a noticeable resurgence in brides’ interest in saris. This, Radharaman says, is largely due to the reinvention that saris have undergone in terms of design, colour and styling, the suppleness of materials, and the variety of blouses available today. Plus, the sari is beyond simply what’s in vogue. “The sari’s unique nature ensures comfort and mobility during celebrations,” Palak Shah says. “The versatility of this sartorial staple also allows for myriad styling possibilities—one can be experimental with the cuts of the blouse, jewellery, and layering with jackets and dupattas while retaining a classic appeal.”

A SUSTAINABLE CHOICE

With many over the world gradually moving towards making sustainable choices, handwoven saris fit the eco-friendly bill. “And with cultural preservation falling under the ambit of sustainability, there’s growing awareness that choosing traditional saris contributes towards keeping India’s weaving techniques and craftsmanship alive, which in-turn supports and keeps artisans in business,” explains Khushi Shah. Chand adds: “Many, especially younger generations, are starting to appreciate the refined artistry and effort that goes into creating these pieces. They take pride in wearing a garment that’s a testament to the skill of master artisans.”
