How to style your wedding with vintage flair

Three wedding designers share expert advice on infusing vintage-inspired elements into your big day.

Bring back the bygone era with archival elements, perhaps even fine china that has been passed down generations, at your nuptials. From antique furniture to a vintage typewriter, the romance and regalia of the old-world is unrivalled, helping to exude charm at your contemporary affair from centuries past.

"Vintage décor elements evoke feelings of nostalgia and work to create a timeless, enchanting, and romantic atmosphere. From gothic arches adorned with a plethora of crimson-hued flowers to pomegranate-laden branches, vintage-inspired elements offer sentimental value for couples transcending time and taking them back to a specific era," explains Aashna Saran, Founder and Creative Head, Aash Studio.

Acoording to Vedika Mohan, Creative Director, The Wedding Design Company, "When planning a vintage-style wedding, pastels and muted shades must go hand-in-hand with the theme, and can be incorporated into the décor via centrepieces, invitations, floral arrangements, and more. An oversized scroll letter penned by the bride to the groom, or vice-versa, will surely tug at the heartstrings."

"Scour local thrift shops for heirloom pieces, including clocks, busts, teacups, candelabras, coffee table books, et al, which can be grouped together on tables, atop the bar, or in lounge areas," she adds.

Anvi Thaker, Founder and Chief Design Officer, The Creative Company, recommends replicating the ambiance of a vintage garden at your soirée. "Think along the lines of wrought iron furniture, manicured grass, a candlestick telephone, chandeliers, wooden frames. and so on. The idea is to add an interactive element for the guests. while reflecting the couple's sensibilities. Especially things that hold a special place in their hearts." PS. Vintage décor makes for fabulous photo-ops, too.
