How to choose the right music band for your wedding

Are we slow dancing to 'Kasoor' or burning up the floor with 'Badtameez Dil'?

Most couples often get the theme, decor, and outfits right and well in time. But it's the music playlist that usually is forgotten about or decided at the fag end of the planning, but you can’t not know the music you want to groove to on your biggest day, can you? You need the low-down on what kind of music you’re playing for every function, not just the sangeet. Remember, India’s got a really good band scene—from indie-pop and rock, to soul and high-energy beats. Here's a handy guide to help you choose the music for your wedding.

Live band or DJ?

Why a DJ
Choosing a good DJ is a great way to set the mood. If there is a DJ you know and like, send them a list of your favourite songs, and you’ll end up rocking throughout the night. A good DJ will mix the latest numbers with the classic melodies, ensuring everyone from the kids to the oldies shake a leg. Make it an unforgettable dance party.

Why live bands
Live bands are a vibe. And it will be perfect if you have an intimate wedding. Hiring a small band (just a singer and guitarist) would be enough. If you want to dance the night away, then a live band may not be the best option, but if you want to enjoy the experience, then we’d definitely recommend having one around.

Yes! You can have both
You can choose to opt for a live band for the reception, and maybe a DJ for the cocktails. We suggest drawing up a list of pros and cons for yourself before deciding.

Things to consider before deciding

1. Budget

Live bands are more expensive than DJs. If you’ve allocated a reasonably small sum of the budget to music, then you’re better off with DJ. But be warned, even a good DJ can cost a tidy sum. If you’re looking at a famous band name, you may have to put aside even more to hire them.

2. Space

Live bands take more space than DJs, they also need a more elaborate set-up (aux, cables, instrument stands). You need to talk to them to understand how much equipment they’ll bring and how much the venue needs to provide.

3. Time

You need to be actively listening to the band/DJ that’s going to be playing. Going to music demonstrations, sampling their work, and deciding the playlist are essential and time-consuming.

Some steps to follow

  1. Look for bands/DJs from experience or via references. It’s a bad idea to hire a band/DJ that you’ve never heard of before. Experience them and their music because only if you enjoy their ambience, others will enjoy it too.
  2. If you’re looking at a live-band dance party…you have to listen to how versatile they are with soft and party songs.
  3. Check the volume. Ask the band or DJ to bring a sound technician with them, or ask the venue to tune the speakers so that no instrument overpowers the other and the listening experience is worth the money you spend.
