The meaning behind the seven phere and how it can solidify your bond

Knowing what these mean will make your wedding even more special.

When it comes to a wedding, many people are excited about the functions, the dance performances, the joota chupai ritual and many other fun elements. They think about the bride's and the groom's entry. The couple carefully selects the songs of their dance. There is just so much buzz around the little things that add merriment to weddings. However, the most important part of a north Indian Hindu wedding—the saat phere—is rather sentimental in nature.

There is depth and meaning behind each phera and while you are tying the knot and promising each other an eternity, it’s important to know what each phera means. Once you know the significance of each phera, your connection will further solidify with your partner.

First phera
While taking the first round of phera, the couple prays to God to be able to have enough nourishment for good health. They pray for plenty of clean and nutritious food—the most basic need.

Second phera
After praying for no lack of food, the couple asks God to grant them endurance on a mental, physical, and spiritual level. The couple further asks for an overall prosperous life.

Third phera
In the third phera, the couple prays to God for strength, to be able to be together in both happiness and pain. They also pray for wealth and prosperity.

Fourth phera
In the fourth phera, the couple prays to have ever-lasting love, compassion, and respect in their hearts for each other and their families.

Fifth phera
During their prayers, they ask for peace and to be blessed with good children. They also promise to be good parents. In today’s times, if a couple doesn’t want children, in their hearts, they can take this to mean a life of nurturing and fertility.

Sixth phera
The sixth phera is all about praying for the tranquillity and peacefulness of family life.

Seventh phera
The final phera is about comradeship, lifelong friendship, and unity, which are the last phera's objectives.

The seven pheras reflect the couples’ vow to be there for each other through thick and thin. Beautifully depicting the journey they will be taking by their side!
