Movies about marriage and family you can watch with your partner

For laughter, tears, and everything in between.

Amid hectic work schedules and a heavily marked social calendar, it’s important to remember to take out some time to spend with your partner. As absurd and ironical as it sounds, after marriage, it may become challenging to be as intimate or physically and emotionally connected to your partner. So, it becomes all the most important to go that extra mile to be with your boo. And we’ve got just the thing for you. Sometimes, a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon calls for drawing the blind, cosying up with your favourite munchies (along with your beau) and watching a movie. With love, laughter, tears, and everything in between, here’s a list of movies that you can watch.

Dil Dhadakne Do

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Dil Dhadakne Do sheds light on the uber rich society of India covering the themes of broken marriages, sexism, and misogyny all accompanied by the overarching theme of money and business transactions disguised as close relations. These issues come to the fore when Kamal and Neelam Mehra invite their friends and family on a 10-day cruise through Greece to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Interspersed with fun Bollywood numbers, witty dialogues, and ever-so-charming Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra, we’d definitely recommend this watch.

Kramer vs Kramer

This 1979 classic starring Meryl Streep is an American legal drama. The film follows the story of Ted Kramer—a workaholic, who is made aware of his frequent unavailability when one day, he lands a promotion only to return home and find that his wife Joanna is leaving him and their son, Billy. Ted and Billy must navigate their way through a new every-day-life and more. Joanna returns after a year to claim the custody of her son and what follows is a tumultuous legal battle.

We are Family

Starring Kajol, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Arjun Rampal, this 2010 film is an adaptation of the American comedy drama Stepmom. The film follows the story of Maya a divorced, single mother with three children who strives to always keep her children safe, comfortable, and happy. When her ex-husband Aman begins dating, his girlfriend is eager to meet the children but a few unfortunate accidents make them believe that she is evil. Watch this for a rollercoaster of emotions, smiles, and tears. We promise you won’t regret it.

2 States

A personal favourite, 2 States is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Chetan Bhagat of the same name, and follows the love story of Ananya and Krish, who meet at IIM Ahmedabad while pursuing an MBA. They’re quick to fall in love and plan a life together, until they realise that they belong to completely different cultural backgrounds and families who would hardly be pleased at the pairing. So, the two set out to convince each other’s families about their marriage and what unfolds is nothing short of an adventure.

Monster-in-Law

Starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, this romantic comedy is a hilarious take on what goes down between a bride-to-be and her mother-in-law—the tussle of wedding planning, the son stuck in between the two ladies of heart, dramatic outburst, ego plays, and more. Watch this for a whole lot of laughter and end the night cuddling with your boo.
