How to write a love letter without sounding cliché?

'Rizz' your way to their heart.

The idea of writing a love letter, legit handwritting it on a pretty paper with a beautiful pen, seems to be long forgotten. Not to say sending memes and reels is less romantic but there is a certain charm about physical letters that creates a more intimate and passionate form of expressing love.

Of course, writing a love letter requires a lot of consideration: what paper you will use, the ink colour, the words you choose, and above all, the most important one is your intention. We often text sweet little nothings to our partner, but do we really think that one day we’ll have a record of all those messages in one place. That’s why love letters are timeless. And if we have convinced you to write one, here is how to write a love letter without sounding cliché.

Collect your thoughts

Just like it did for Lara Jean (played by Lana Condor) in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, crafting a love letter requires you to allow yourself to fully focus on your feelings towards your partner. Take a pause, think, reflect, and then articulate them. Here are a few things you can include in your love letter that will make it personalised and help you communicate everything that you feel. After all, it is not only about writing ‘I love you’, as that they know.

Say it all; cute, mushy, whacky

Write about stuff which you wouldn’t or haven't told them until now in person. Give them instances, elaborate on scenarios. Remember, your partner will save this token of love for a long time, so make this a memorable one.

(Maybe) talk about your future

The timeline of your letter totally depends on you. But if you feel quite into it, go the extra mile and write about all the plans and adventures you want to experience with your partner in the near future or how you see the relationship grow in the long-term. This will let them know you are in for a long-term commitment and give them with extra reassurance.

Letters are written as keepsakes; to be read and re-read over time. The emotions and excitement while opening a letter is unmatched. It reminds you of the person more deeply and creates a imagery of past moments and makes you realise how treasured your relationship is (or has been).

Each love letter is far more than a piece of paper. It’s a dedication of everlasting love you have for the other person which transcends boundaries of distance.
