Tara Sutaria Gets Candid About Love at First Sight, Her Dream Wedding and Growing Up With a Twin

At 25, she is wiser than her years, when discussing equality between the sexes, or how she has learnt to honour herself, or her idea of love. “No matter what profession one is in, all anyone can want in someone else is the ability to laugh and keep things light. In my line of work, I feel like nobody really enjoys laughing at what they do...” she says matter-of-factly.

That is not to say that Tara isn’t a romantic at heart. She has, what she describes, a “love for love”, and turns to the special bond that her grandparents shared as the ideal. “They would hug, dance, and kiss... they were unabashedly in love, something so pure and powerful. I hope that my relationship is going to be like that,” she says with optimism.

And when it comes to family, she frequently speaks about her fraternal twin sister Pia, whom she considers her confidante, friend, and mother figure. Tara comes across as a girl who is passionate about her life and goals, and equally about her relationships. In this special conversation with Brides Today, she reveals her hopes for her future...

BRIDES TODAY: TELL US, ARE YOU ‘LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT’ KIND OF A PERSON, OR DO YOU PREFER TO GET TO KNOW SOMEONE GRADUALLY?

Tara Sutaria: I know this is a funny thing to say, but my zodiac sign is Scorpio, and we are known to be very passionate about literally everything. In fact, we have a love for love. I do believe in love at first sight, even though I know that sounds cheesy and even crazy in today’s times. Of course, it is very important to get to know the other person, and that does happen over time, but I absolutely love the concept. Why not fall in love at first sight, I say?

BT: AND HAVE YOU EVER FALLEN IN LOVE OFTEN AT FIRST SIGHT?

TS: Not often, because I know what I want...I don’t think you can fall in love all the time. However, I am a romantic, and I would always look for someone who shares that quality as well.

BT: WHAT WOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN AN IDEAL PARTNER?

TS: I don’t have a list, really. But especially over the past year, I have had a lot of time to reflect on what I want in life. No matter what profession one is in, all that anyone can want in someone else is the ability to laugh and keep things light. I think it is very cool to be able to laugh at yourself. In my line of work, I feel like nobody really enjoys laughing at what they do. Sometimes your movie may not be a hit, or you may not give the best performance, but everyone pretends like everything is great and every film is fantastic... I believe you need a partner who should be able to make you laugh and ground you.

BT: AND HOW DO YOU IMAGINE YOUR WEDDING TO BE LIKE?

TS: So many of my friends and family have had these magical, huge weddings. However, I am a very private person and quite shy, so mine would probably be more intimate. It’s much more special that way. I might have a destination wedding, perhaps in Italy. I connect with that country on so many levels. Or, for all you know, it could even be in Mumbai since I’ve grown up here...

BT: WHAT BRIDAL OUTFITS WOULD YOU LIKE TO WEAR?

TS: I haven't really thought too much about it, to be honest. I’d probably wear styles that are elegant and old-fashioned. I’ve always wanted to design my own wedding outfit because I am obsessed with anything to do with design; be it my home or clothes. Before I began acting, I used to be a singer, and would design all my clothes for my concerts. I would want to do the same for my big day.

BT: WHAT A CREATIVE IDEA! IN THE PAST, YOU’VE SPOKEN ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR ROMANTIC MOVIES, AND EVEN POETRY. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITES?

TS: My twin sister Pia reads much more than I do, and while I wish I read more as well, I like to sketch. One of my favourite films is Love Story [by Erich Segal] from the ’70s; it gets me each time. Even the book, I absolutely love it...I’ve read it around eight or nine times, and each time I get teary-eyed.

BT: AND ARE YOU AN OLD-FASHIONED GIRL AT HEART?

TS: I think so, because even the music I’ve always listened to has been from the ’50s to the ’80s...I draw the line at the ’90s. For some reason, I don’t connect with millennial music, I just don’t get it. I am always listening to retro songs and everyone around me keeps complaining. I collect records and have a record player here, which plays through the evening and especially when I have guests over...

BT: WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO GROW UP WITH A TWIN?

TS: Now that we are older, we realise what a blessing it has been to grow up with each other being the same age—Pia is around two minutes older than me, and in so many ways, we have had the same experiences. A lot of who I am today is because of Pia, because she has always been like a mother to me, the dominant one out of the two of us. I was so shy while growing up, I had no friends, and she would drag me to a party or into a crowd and say, ‘meet my sister!’ or ‘don’t be sitting in the corner in school’. It is amazing to have that one person who pushes you into doing things that you won't consider myself. I owe a lot to her. She has moved to London, and it’s very different to live without her.
