This company is bringing ‘Indian Matchmaking’ IRL and some of us could be missing out

There’s enough and more said and known of the famous Sima Taparia. And while some of us may want to run away from her idea of what makes for a good match and an even better marriage, a lot of us have, are currently, or wanting to go down the path, reasons being…let’s just say…myriad. And while one-on-one matchmaking is the traditional way to do it, wouldn’t it be better if you happened to meet your possibly significant other at an event (who cares if it is orchestrated)?

You get ready in your smart fineries for convention, and you’re sitting there, listening to the moderator when your eyes drift across the room and there he is. You happen to be teamed up in a game of dumb charades—he enacts something, only you get it, he smiles, you laugh. The rest of the night you get on like a house on fire, and as you say goodnight you exchange numbers, and there is promise of where this will go. (Don’t forget that this is all premium, so the best of food, ambience, and whatnot.)

Sounds idyllic? Well, that’s Indian Matchmaking for you, but Mohan Matchmaking style. It’s speed dating in some ways, but done the Indian way.

Some reviews of the events have criticised it saying there wasn’t enough focus on the parameters of each person, aka not enough matchmaking done, and the ratio of boys to girls was very skewed on the latter. And while we can sure side with the ratio complaint (let’s not have people fight for each other), we do wonder if an organic approach to a group convention like this is better.

Wherever we may be at with this event, we can’t help but think it might be an interesting one to introduce here in India. After all, it appeases the parents and gives you the chance to have a fun night and meet people who are (hopefully) looking for the same things in life. And looks like there have been successes!
