Is it necessary to go on a honeymoon straight after your wedding? 

A honeymoon, by definition, is a vacation that newly married couples go on after their wedding. And more often than not, it follows immediately after the special day. While many extol the virtues of going on vacation straight after their wedding (the excitement! The romance!), delaying the trip and going on a latermoon certainly has its benefits. And if you’re still on the fence, here's why we think a delayed honeymoon is viable. 

You have the time and liberty to plan a longer trip

Most Indian weddings are a tedious week-long affair with multiple events and ceremonies. Not to mention the weeks of planning required ahead of your big day, all of which will see you take several days off from work. Adding a long vacation may not be ideal as it could exhaust your remaining leaves, leaving you with a few days to plan your honeymoon. However, staggering your leaves and going on a honeymoon later means you get to plan a longer holiday. You could even club it with public holidays and weekends to make the most of your latermoon. 

You can allocate a bigger budget

We won’t pretend that a honeymoon is inexpensive, especially if you’ve got an international destination on your mind. The flights, hotel, and meals as well as the many holiday activities can quickly add up, after all, it is your honeymoon and you will want to splurge a little. A honeymoon straight after a wedding means you’ll need to compromise on the budget, either on your wedding or the honeymoon. But if you give yourself time after your wedding, you can save up for the honeymoon and have a bigger budget for a better vacation. 

You’re likely to be less stressed and more relaxed

Planning a wedding is no small feat. It requires a near-miraculous coordination between the venue managers, caterers, stylists, decorators, and so on to pull off the event successfully. Not to mention the wedding shopping and all the other tiny details. After all of this, the prospect of packing, figuring out logistics, and braving long-haul flights will hardly make you feel relaxed or excited. And while the vacation itself might not be as stressful, having a jam-packed itinerary can make it feel that way. Pushing off your honeymoon to a few weeks or even months after your wedding gives you some breathing room, allowing the euphoria set in, and easing you enough to actually enjoy your trip. What’s more, this means you don’t have to multi-task wedding and honeymoon planning, so it’s a win-win. 

You can be flexible with the destination

Going on your honeymoon right after the wedding can limit your destination options and force you to compromise on your dream honeymoon due to weather and other factors. For instance, if you’re getting married in December and are planning to honeymoon in Singapore, it might not be the best time since they experience heavy monsoons during that month. This way, if you don’t let your honeymoon get tied to your wedding, you can choose to travel during the off-season and save money in the process. 

You can time it with your annual leaves

When planning your honeymoon, you’re bound to figure out how much time you can take off work and how many paid leaves you can take. Scheduling your honeymoon for a later date allows you to save up on your leaves and make maximum use of them for the trip since most of your existing leaves are likely to get used up for the wedding.
