Overlooked destinations that are perfect for your honeymoon

Hidden gems for you and beau!

Relaxing on a beach in the Maldives or touring a vineyard in Italy are certainly memorable ways for newlyweds to celebrate their marriage. For others though, travelling to an underrated honeymoon destination is the ultimate vacation goal. These hidden gems often place a special emphasis on culture and experiences that you won't find at run-of-the-mill destinations. With increasingly growing hoards heading to the most popular destinations globally, it comes as no surprise that some newlyweds would want to savour some privacy. If you’re the kind of couple that wants to spend your honeymoon trying exotic foods, walking through tunnels of centuries-old castles, or even just laying on a deserted beach, below are some of the most underrated honeymoon destinations to consider for your next romantic getaway.

Canary Islands

If you were considering a trip to Spain for your honeymoon, why not venture off the mainland and head to the Canary Islands? Located just off the coast of Morocco, this Spanish archipelago is small yet boasts a diverse and dramatic landscape, from tropical beaches to cliffside treks. Don’t miss Doramas Park, an urban park in the centre of Las Palmas, the capital city. You can walk hand-in-hand around the many paths shaded by giant palms, stop for a morning tea or coffee in the cafe, and swing by the Museo Nestor for a little artistic inspiration. You could even choose to relax at the beach and its oceanside dunes.

Patagonia

Patagonia is a bucket-list destination for adventure travellers, but it’s also one of the most underrated honeymoon destinations for couples. While hiking through occasional mud and wind may not seem at first glance like a romantic activity, standing together in front of some of the world’s most iconic mountains can be a magical experience when shared with the right person. While in Patagonia, consider booking a ride on the End of the World Train to make your way through this remote landscape and marvel at the sights while sharing some light bites and a bottle of Chilean wine. Consider taking a sightseeing cruise where you can spot everything from majestic whales to charming penguins in South America.

Banff, Canada

Swap your flip-flops for a pair of hiking boots and take a trip to the Banff National Park. With several natural hot springs set in the shadow of the Canadian Rockies, there are endless opportunities to snuggle while stargazing. Enjoy a romantic dinner at an outdoor restaurant or grab a cocktail and relax on the deck during one of the many summer music events held outdoors. For couples that hike, head to Lake Louise and hike to a historic teahouse. With beautiful views of the mountains, you’ll find it irresistible not to cosy up with some snacks and tea for two while perching on the peak.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

If you're looking for a cool mix of cultural exploration, world-class water activities, and spectacular beaches, you'll love Zanzibar. It's an exotic archipelago located off the coast of Tanzania. Consider planning your visit from June to October when the weather here is warmer and less humid, just exactly what you need for a perfect stay! When you're not busy relaxing on the beach, having a spa session, or seeking out local animals, take a popular spice tour to learn more about the island’s unique spices and herbs.

Marrakech, Morocco

Nestled in the heart of Morocco, Marrakech has a wonderfully vibrant feel that will make you fall in love with its charm instantly. From the majestic Atlas Mountains to the vast Sahara Desert, Marrakech is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The surrounding souks and spice markets make it even better. And its rich blend of African, Arab, and European influences offers a uniquely immersive experience. Head here with your paramour if you’re looking for a honeymoon filled with cultural experiences.

Lapland, Finland

Finnish Lapland is known for its vast subarctic wilderness, luxurious ski resorts and the dancing Northern Lights. It is also the home of the indigenous people Sami. You and beau can even visit or stay in a literal snow castle. If you’re dog people, consider riding a Husky sled to go from one place to another. Indulge in hearty local delicacies that’ll warm the belly and the heart.  And the best part? You can release your stress the Finnish way, via a sauna gondola.

Malta

If you’re thinking of an island honeymoon, but laying out in the sun for a week isn’t your cup of tea, then consider Malta. The little island located in the centre of the Mediterranean has been at the crossroads of civilizations for most of its 7,000-year history. You can explore the world’s oldest temples, wander through the capital of Valletta, enjoy beautiful beaches and stunning vistas, and eat delicious seafood. Thanks to its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta played an important role during World War II. For those fond of diving, there are six historic military wrecks to explore.

Albanian Riviera

Imagine a honeymoon spent in the Mediterranean surrounded by ancient Greek sites, minus all the crazy crowds. Consider the vibrant beaches and romantic ambience that the Albanian Riviera offers. Feast on excellent Greek food; think seafood, grilled meats, fresh salads and more (since Albania used to be a Greek colony). You and bae can enjoy the unspoiled beaches and watch performances in a 4th-century Greek theatre at the Butrint archaeological site and national park.
