Remembering Kate Spade: Her Life, Iconic Creations And Contribution To Fashion

Honouring the way Kate Spade changed the fashion industry and our relationship with it.

Kate Spade has died, but her legacy will continue to shine through her wonderful designs. The designer, 55, was found dead at her New York apartment yesterday, after an apparent suicide.

But let’s not forget her life, a chic line of handbags, iconic creations, and her contribution to the world of fashion.

A fashion icon herself, Kate Spade, combined main street luxury with high-end fashion and began her career as an accessory editor, for the magazine Mademoiselle.

She took her passion for design to the next level and co-founded her eponymous brand with her husband in 1993 and everyone was in total awe, as the brand was the first one to work with nylon. They created a timeless boxy, black nylon bag, which would go from work to party.

Her accessories also reflected her own personality in many ways, as the designer was often seen wearing preppy clothes and eccentric accessories, and people loved how minimalistic-yet-quirky her designs were. She would simply take a classic tote or a clutch and add a fun element to it, making it iconic.

The founder of such playful accessories, statement eyewear, extraordinary shoes and dresses, sold her label to Coach in 2007 for $2.4 billion, and came back with a new brand, Frances Valentine, in 2015 known for zippy signatures.

And not so surprisingly her unique designs now have more than 300 retail shops worldwide. The line became an instant hit, as people loved how utilitarian and affordable the designs were and had colourful palettes. Her work was always a breath of fresh air, as the designer got famous for making feminine totes with polka dot bows and literally everyone wanted to own a Kate Spade bag.
