It’s no secret that Charli XCX and her latest album ‘brat’ have triggered a cultural zeitgeist. Initially, “that’s so brat” was used to describe anything in the same distinctive slime green colour scheme, but in recent weeks it’s gone on to signify something much bigger. Now, it’s shorthand for enjoying the messiness of life. The dictionary may define a brat as “an ill-mannered immature person.” But according to Charli, it’s a term of endearment. “You’re just that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and, like, maybe says some dumb things sometimes,” says Charli. “Who feels herself, but then also has a breakdown, but kinda parties through it. It’s very honest, very blunt, and a little bit volatile. Does dumb things, but, like, it’s brat!" she adds.
The aesthetic has prompted the rise of a very specific look. It’s high-heel platform shoes worn with a shirt that's buttons are undone. It’s a white tank top cut up with reckless abandon and uneven edges. It’s a baby tee with a small coffee stain on the top, a wrinkled oversized t-shirt worn as a dress, or an asymmetrical party top that feels weird and alluring all at once. To dress like a brat means not caring what people think, embracing all the chaos, and wearing clothing meant for life—as long as that life involves dancing until the sun rises and maybe getting into some unserious trouble along the way. This trend has come after what felt like an eternity of the “clean girl aesthetic” the core idea of which is to look almost too perfect. And what better time to channel this energy than at your final night out on the town as a single gal—your bachelorette party?
