For any bride-to-be, the run-up to your wedding is probably one of the most stressful times. Along with planning for your big day, there’s a laundry-list of checks to mark off—your outfits, beauty routines, hair and makeup looks, the list goes on. While your eyebrows may be a very small part of the larger picture, well-done eyebrows make a whirlwind of a difference to your face. And that’s where microblading fits in. Unfortunately, this semi-permanent procedure doesn’t get its due. Why? Because of the fear and myths that surround it! We spoke to brow expert, Arti Bagga who broke down everything you need to know about microblading.
Busting myths
“Microblading is a trending semi-permanent eyebrow enhancement that is performed using a small blade and needle to scratch hair-like looking strokes onto the upper layer of the skin,” she explains. “Some people think that it is a block tattoo, but in reality, it is a natural hairstroke. It doesn’t go as deep as a tattoo, and is semi-permanent which only lasts around one or two years with most of my clients.”
One of the biggest concerns that people often have with microblading is the experience (read: is it painfu?l). According to Bagga, the entire experience is rather painless, as a strong numbing cream is used prior to conducting the treatment. “Microblading if done right should only be performed on the upper layers of the skin. It only turns blue, red, or green, if either the work was done too deep or the pigment used had metals in it.”
Bridal microblading
Fun fact: every artist has their own style of microblading which almost makes it signature and unique to them, almost like handwriting. “I’d say always research the artists work to see what suits your style best,” recommends Bagga. “For example, I specialise in creating an ultra-natural look where it blends in with the hair.”
It’s important to note that microblading needs to be done well in advance before your wedding as the skin goes through a healing process. The expert states that there’s a dark stage, a mild scabbing stage, and then the healed result is revealed after four weeks. “You can opt for a touch-up a month before your wedding if there are any areas that need more filling.”
Two months before your wedding day is the ideal period when a bride should opt for microblading, as this allows enough and more time for touch-ups and healing. “I also recommend no makeup on the brow area as this can affect the results, so plan well before the events.”
Why opt for microblading?
It’s simple! Your eyebrows will remain intact, come rain or shine. Microblading ensures that your brows look done sans any effort. It is waterproof, and therefore there’s no more having to fix your eyebrows on your wedding day or even your honeymoon.
Pre- and post-care
Moisturising and gently exfoliating the eyebrows for a few days before the treatment ensures that the area is hydrated and free from any dead skin. Avoid chemical peels or botox a week before the treatment. “The two-week healing process is important for the best-healed results, try your best to keep them dry from water activities and makeup.”
In terms of post-care, monthly cleaning and trimming will keep your brows in shape after microblading. Bagga also recommends always using an SPF on your brows this protects the colour too. “Keeping it natural is always a request I get often—natural fluffy fronts with more fullness toward the ends and following and enhancing the natural shape of your eyebrows is the best.”
