If you’re a chronic acrylic manicure girl, here’s how to revive your brittle nails

An expert recommends proper prep and good after-care.

There’s an unmatched joy to be derived from a freshly polished set of nails. With no dearth of options available to facilitate a long-lasting manicure, many of us count monthly gel overlays or acrylics as sacred beauty rituals. However, a common theme quickly emerges when discussing acrylic or gel nails with girlfriends—the awful after-effects, from brittleness to uneven textures. This experience is shared by most if not all, mani connoisseurs. And too often, the damage is sought to be covered up with another set of gel nails or acrylic nails, leading to a frustrating, vicious cycle. We talked to experts to weigh in on the best ways to prevent these dreadful effects and trusted ways to extend some much-needed TLC to your fingertips.

What causes brittleness?

Dr. Neha Yadav, an aesthetic cosmetic surgeon at VLCC India explains, “UV light, often used in salons to cure gel polish and acrylic nails, can have some negative effects when used frequently. While it aids nails in hardening quickly, too much exposure can weaken the natural nail, cause thinning or discoloration, and even increase the risk of skin damage over time. The chemicals used in acrylic nails, like the glue and bonding agents, are also tough on your nails, potentially leading to brittleness, infections, or even allergic reactions if you're sensitive to ingredients like formaldehyde,” clarified Dr. Yadav.

Vitamin B12 and iron deficiencies are also contributing causes. Fret not, because we have curated expert-backed ways to prevent and combat brittleness.

Nail prep is important

For the times you do need a flush of colour to your fingertips, use a strengthening base coat.

Dr. Yadav, recommends “[to] use a strengthening base coat to protect and fortify your nails, before applying nail polish or any treatment.” Take your pick from these products.

A break is essential

Dr. Yadav recommends, “If you regularly get manicures, it’s important to give your nails a break between treatments to recover and strengthen. Consider taking a week off from nail polish and acrylics every month to allow your nails to breathe. During this time, you can apply a nail hardener or strengthener to help rebuild and fortify your nails. A nail conditioner is a highly effective treatment that helps restore damaged nails”
