Makeup Removal Mistakes That Can Damage Your Skin

Namrata Soni, celebrity makeup artist, tells you the right way to remove makeup before calling it a day

Removing makeup before going to bed is absolutely necessary. You know how sleeping with makeup on could lead to breakouts, dryness, ageing and other skin issues. But did you know removing makeup the wrong way could damage your skin? If you rubbed the sensitive eye area or did not use a remover suitable to your skin, it could lead to fine lines and clogged pores. Celebrity makeup artist Namrata Soni, lists down the mistakes you might be making and how to set it right.

#Mistake1 Using a dry microfibre cloth or using it with cold water to remove makeup

Always use lukewarm water, it’s gentle on the skin. And gently rotate the microfibre cloth on the skin. Don't pull and tug. Keep the cloth on your eyes for at least 20 to 30 seconds to disintegrate the makeup formulations.  You might be thinking that use of traditional makeup removers, will help you to clean your face completely, but it doesn't. Try this trick of steaming with the microfibre hot towel on your face, it will open the pores and help in releasing the leftover dust.

#Mistake2 Using a formulation that does not suit your skin

For, instance if you have dry skin and you use a foaming cleanser, it could lead to irritation and sensitivity around the eyes and on the skin. Opt for creamy or milky cleansers if you have dry skin. Factor in your skin type before buying a cleanser.

#Mistake3 Tugging and rubbing the skin with cotton pads and makeup wipes

If you tend to do this multiple times to remove stubborn water proof formulations, then you are making a mistake. Instead of rubbing and damaging your skin, try to keep the remover on your face for at least 10-15 seconds before cleansing. This would help dissolve the water-proof formulations and it would come off easily.

#Mistake4 You start by removing your eye makeup first

If you are the one who loves to wear bold lipstick, it is best to start first with lip cleansing; otherwise, you will find the colour spreading all over the face. Next, clean your face and then do the eyes last. Cleaning the eyes first will never help cleaning eyeliner or mascara in one stroke. You will find tiny breakouts near the eyes when you wake up.

#Mistake5 Using only a makeup wipe

Most of us, use  makeup wipes for removing our makeup as they are quick and easy to use. But you should be aware of the fact that they only remove the upper layer of your makeup. They are good if you use them only as the very first step of cleansing. Try using Simply Nam Makeup Remover and Cleansing Towel (available in Sephora stores and online), that’s better at removing makeup and is reusable, so it reduces your carbon footprints as well.

#Mistake6 Not tying your hair while removing makeup

Tie your hair tight before you start with your face cleaning. One might be thinking it of no use, but open hair would lead  to partial cleaning as your hairline is not exposed completely.

#Mistake7 Not removing sunscreen or BB cream

If you are someone who wears   BB cream or sunscreen daily and think  it does not require cleaning before going to bed, then you are  wrong. Any kind of  lotion or skincare used leads to the clogging of the pores, which will further  lead  to the growth of acne, pimples and blackheads.
