Here’s your guide to using rice water for healthier, stunning locks

We've all seen it, but does it actually do the job?

When it comes to achieving gorgeous and healthy hair, we tend to often look for an array of products and treatments, some of which come with hefty price tags. But, what if I told you that the secret to healthy and beautiful hair that you have always dreamed of might be in your kitchen cupboard?

Rice water is a natural treatment made by soaking or fermenting rice in water. This practice has been popular in various cultures for centuries. Enriched with essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, rice water can promote hair growth, strengthen hair, reduce frizz, and improve overall health. It’s not only a cost-effective solution but also a natural, sustainable approach to achieving hair that looks and feels absolutely stunning.

Here are a few benefits of incorporating rice water into your hair care routine:

Stimulates hair growth: Rich in inositol, a vital component that helps repair damaged hair and encourages new hair growth, rice water helps strengthen your hair roots, which eventually leads to longer and healthier locks over time.

Strengthens hair shaft: The amino acids in rice water fortify the hair shaft, making it more resilient and less prone to breakage. This is particularly beneficial for people with fragile or thin hair.

Enhances shine and reduces frizz: The vitamins and minerals in rice water, such as B vitamins and antioxidants, nourish your hair, leading to a natural shine and vibrancy. Additionally, it also acts as a natural conditioner, smoothing the hair cuticles, thus helping in reducing frizz and tangles, leaving your hair more manageable and easier to style.

Damage repair: Over time, your hair can suffer from damage due to styling, heat, and other environmental factors. Rice water can help repair this damage and rejuvenate your hair, making it look and feel healthier.

Balanced scalp: A healthy scalp is essential for hair growth and overall hair health. The use of rice water can help balance the scalp’s pH levels and reduce excess oil, which is especially beneficial for individuals with oily scalps.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to incorporate rice water into your hair care routine:

Prepare your rice water

  • Measure approximately ½ cup to 1 cup of uncooked rice, depending on your hair length and how much rice water you want to make.
  • Rinse the rice thoroughly with water to remove any impurities or dirt and then place the rinsed rice in a clean bowl or container.
  • Add 2-3 cups of water to the rice and make sure that the water is enough to submerge the rice completely.
  • Allow the rice to soak in the water for about 30 minutes to 24 hours. The longer you soak it, the more concentrated the rice water will become. For a balanced solution, soak it for six to eight hours.
  • After soaking, strain the rice water into a clean bowl using a fine strainer or cloth to remove the rice grains and the liquid you collect after this process is your rice water.

Add essential oils

  • To enhance the benefits and aroma, you can add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, rosemary, or peppermint to your rice water as these oils can also help with hair health.

Storing rice water

  • We recommend storing the rice water in an air-tight container or a spray bottle and keeping it in the refrigerator. Rice water can go bad quickly, so it’s best to use it within a week.

 Application

  • This household ingredient can be used in various ways in your hair care routine to promote healthier, stronger, and shinier hair. Here are some common methods:
  1. Rinse: After shampooing, pour rice water over your hair, making sure to distribute and massage it evenly from your scalp to the tips of your hair. Then, leave it on for a few minutes and rinse it with cold water.
  2. Conditioner: After shampooing, use rice water as a conditioner. Apply it to your hair, focusing on the ends as they tend to be more prone to damage. Leave the rice water on your hair for a few minutes and then rinse it thoroughly with cold water.
  3. Hair mask: You can even use hair water as a hair mask for a deeper conditioning treatment. Start by applying rice water to your dry or damp hair and massage it ensuring even distribution. Make sure you cover your head with a shower cap or plastic wrap to trap heat and enhance absorption and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with cold water.

Remember to always use cold water for rinsing rice water, as hot water may cause the proteins in the rice water to coagulate, making it difficult to wash out.

Moreover, consistency is key when using rice water for hair care. It may take some time to see noticeable results, so be patient and continue using it regularly if it works well for your hair. However, if you experience any adverse reactions, such as dryness or irritation, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
