From your dermatologist to your bestie and beauty enthusiasts on the Internet, everyone is talking about Glutathione or GSH. While some say that is a completely natural antioxidant, others talk about GSH being a medication that should not be used recklessly.
Well, both of it is true. Glutathione or GSH influences the melanin synthesis in the body. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its colour and Glutathione helps in inhibiting its formation. So, you end up with brighter, clearer complexion.
Meanwhile, oral supplements of GSH are also used to improve the liver health and it is best to consult your dermatologist to help understand what dose and formulation would be best suited for you.
“Glutathione is a good antioxidant and helps improve the general skin quality thus, the topical glutathione formulations can be used to improve the skin tone, moisture content and skin smoothness. People who generally tend to have an uneven skin tone, pigmented spots, dull and dehydrated skin usually tend to benefit. However, the results are very subjective even though some studies have proven the benefits of the glutathione applications, more such studies are needed to improve our understanding about it,” says Dr Nirupama Parwanda, dermatologist and founder, Zolie Skin Clinic.
Intravenous infusion as well as microneedling this potent antioxidant into your skin are a popular component of many bridal beauty treatments. 'Treatment wise, I like microneedling of glutathione into the skin, and also IVglutathione for extra antioxidant boosts. Skincare is only absorbed minimally deeper into the skin, that's why microneedling is beneficial because it will allow deeper infusion of these superpotent anti-pigmentation actives to where it's needed. Our lives are full of oxidative stress, and medications like paracetamol, and pain-killers, and pollution and stress all deplete glutathione. That's why quick IV infusions are the way to go,' says Dr Kiran Sethi, dermatologist and founder, Isya Aesthetics.
So, if you are looking to add this ingredient to your skincare regime, here are a few expert-approved products to try out in consultation with your dermatologist:
Sesderma Hidroquin Gel
'Glutathione fits in my skincare regimen in both my skincare and my supplements. In skincare, I like it in brightening serums such as this Sesderma's Hidroquin Gel because it will help prevent pigmentation while also acting as a potent antioxidant,' says Dr Sethi.
