Vedika and Omair's interfaith court marriage defies cultural norms

Modern love prevails.

In a world where traditions often dictate the course of love, this couple dared to challenge convention. Meet Vedika Mohan (creative director at the Wedding Design Company) and Omair Warsi, whose journey to marriage defied cultural norms and embraced a path often less travelled. Choosing to forego the cultural expectations, they embarked on an interfaith court marriage, symbolising their commitment to each other and their shared value of equality and unity. By choosing to say “I do” in a court of law, Mohan and Warsi emphasised the importance of their partnership above all else. They challenged societal expectations and paved the way for a new narrative of love and marriage—one that celebrates diversity, embraces individuality, and transcends boundaries.

“Our marriage was a celebration of our unique bond, devoid of traditional constraints. We consciously chose to forego religious rituals and instead opted for a fusion that reflected the both of us as individuals and as a couple. Our families embraced this decision wholeheartedly. Rather than adhering to conventional norms, we curated a wedding that encapsulated joy, authenticity, and our relationship in its purest form. From tying kaleeras but not wearing a chooda to having a nearly four-hour-long baraat but no pheras or nikah, we picked the ceremonies and traditions that we wanted to include in our celebrations. We exchanged vows as that was our moment of serenity and our binding factor for all the celebrations. It was our version of a declaration of love. We crafted memorable moments that resonated with us and we wanted to share all this with a close-knit group of family and friends like family,” says the bride Vedika Mohan.

As wedding planners, they have seen it all—the extravagant, the intimate, the traditional, and the offbeat. So when it came to their own wedding, the expectations were high. Mohan’s expertise in the industry played a pivotal role in realising the wedding of their dreams. The wonderful union commenced with the ‘sitare and dhol nights’. The function exuded old-school charm with the house being decorated with genda phools and candle lanterns. Mohan looked beyond stunning in a beautiful burgundy velvet outfit created by Sureen Chowdhri and Warsi looked striking in a black kurta pyjama set adorned with mirror work and designed by Abha Batra.

Away from elaborate traditional ceremonies, the couple opted for a simple court wedding to create a ceremony that reflected their personal values and preferences. Staying true to her roots, and advocating a symbol of legacy, the bride opted to adorn her mother’s golden saree, her wedding jewellery and the wedding dupatta which she wore as an odhni. She paired it with heirloom pieces like her grandmother's and her great-grandmother’s bangles and cuffs, thus showcasing cultural connection and a means to preserve family history.

Amid the lush garden of their home, the Wedding Design Company achieved their ultimate pastel paradise with vibrant arrays of diases, creating the most picture-perfect setting for their intimate lunch. The garden was adorned with unique touches like custom-made dragonflies, hand-painted furniture which added a personal flair to the setting. Everything from the table mats to the upholstery was tailor made to perfection.

Vedika looked breathtaking in a custom made silver corset for their Delhi reception and she beautifully paired with a lilac hand embroidered cape and pear embellished pants designed by Animaka Khanna. Inspired by the Chintz narrative, traditional Rajasthani tents showcased bespoke hand-painted designs reminiscent of Indian Chintz.

The sangeet ceremony with the stunning Suryagarh in the backdrop, was centred on the theme of rustic luxury. The set-up was illuminated by safari oil lamps, and the décor seamlessly blended earthen pots, dried grass, and candles. Heartfelt performances by family and friends made the sangeet an unforgettable affair.

The following day kicked off with a lively lunch themed around a kaleidoscope, showcasing vibrant block prints in bold shades of pink and green. Mohan wore a bespoke hot pink sharara set embellished with mirror work by Abhinav Mishra, while Warsi donned a gradient orange-cream coloured Nehru jacket. The festive ambience was enhanced with traditional Indian elements like desi gulaab (roses) and hanging parrots. The bride’s intricately designed kaleeras, featured elements like their mutual love for dogs, passion for the beach, Asian cuisine, golf, and football (Warsi's hobbies), as well as their joint appreciation for fashion, movies (Mohan's interests), and a fondness for tequila.
