What is the significance of 'pehli rasoi' in a newly-married couple’s life?

With Pulkit Samrat making a delicious halwa for Kriti Kharbanda and her family, we take a deep dive into the traditional ritual.

After their dreamy wedding in February, lovebirds Pulkit Samrat and Kriti Kharbanda embark on their journey towards happily ever after, starting with a traditional wedding ritual known as pehli rasoi. While typically involving only the newly married bride, Samrat decided to participate in the custom as well, cooking up a lip-smacking halwa for his beloved and we can't stop gushing over this green flag behaviour!

So what is the pehli rasoi ritual and why is it significant?

A traditional Hindu wedding ritual, pehli rasoi is where the newly married bride cooks her first meal for her in-laws. The ritual symbolises new beginnings, fostering a sense of love and acceptance between the bride and her in-laws. The meal, in most cases, is a sweet dish because it’s a nice way to start new beginnings. Moreover, the dessert is symbolic of the sweetness and harmony that the bride aims to bring into her marital life.

After successfully preparing a halwa for her pehli rasoi, Kharbanda treated her followers to photos of Samrat doing the same; the actor, like his bride, made a sweet halwa with dry fruits. In the photos, Samrat can be seen smiling as he prepares the dish for Kharbanda's parents in Bengaluru. Sharing this heartfelt moment, Kharbanda wrote a caption, “Green flag alert! Ok so something major happened yesterday and I fell in love all over again. I didn't think this was possible, but yet, it happened. Pulkit ki pehli rasoi happened yesterday. I walked into the kitchen and realised he was making halwa. I asked him what he was doing, and he casually responded, 'Halwa bana raha hoon, it's my pehli rasoi.' I giggled and told him, pehli rasoi ladki ki hoti hai baby. To which his response was, ‘That's so silly, we've both decided to share equal responsibility in this relationship. You cooked for our family back home in Delhi, I'll cook for our family here in Bengaluru. Simple!'”

Kharbanda added, “He used the word simple. Yes. So casually he changed everything around and used the word simple. And in all honesty, it was. It was that simple. Pulkit Samrat you are the best thing that's ever happened to me. Thank you for showing me that you're the best decision I've ever made. Tu sabr ka phal hai baby, sabse meetha! P.S. The pictures aren't so great because I was too blurry visually from being supremely emo, but really wanted to share this with the world.”
